A tried and tested way of energising yourself is Yoga in its broadest sense, which is not limited to the practice of just posture based excercises known as Hatha-Yoga.

195 Yoga aphorisms, known as Yoga Sutras, were compiled in the early centuries CE, by the sage Patanjali in India who synthesised and organised knowledge about Yoga from much older traditions.

The Yoga aphorisms are best known for the reference to 8 elements of practice culminating in a state of meditative consciousness of the mind, by concentration on something, leading to meditative absorption, and with regular practice, the development of a luminous mind which is equanimous and mindful.

The 8 elements of Yoga practice are:

Abstinences (Yama)

Observances (Niyama)

Yoga postures (Asana)

Breath control (Pranayama)

Withdrawl of the senses (Pratyahara)

Concentration of the mind (Dharana)

Meditation (Dhyana)

Absorption (Samadhi)

The main aim is to reach a state where you are untouched by the highs and lows of a dual world by transitioning to a meditative and metaphysical witness-consciousness state and observing empirical reality as separate from it. The by-product of this is being infused with Vital Life Energy which elevates your body and mind leading to a better quality of life.

Here are a host of metaphors that may encourage you to do Yoga and meditation, daily, to keep you going with your life in a state of happiness and devoid of stress:

Yoga and meditation is like filling your bicycle tyres with just the right amount of air so that your ride is not bumpy but smooth because the air also acts like a shock-absorber.

Yoga and meditation is like topping up your vehicle with fuel for the day. You have to experience a low to know what a high is.

Which brings me to the point that everything that exists is like a wave. It rises, plays for a while and then recedes. Have you ever watched a wave in an ocean? The waves are not winning or losing but just moving…

So that’s how life is to be lived - constantly moving, marching on, and never quitting. Forget to die as well and allow life to take its time to give you many experiences!!! If one had to define a champion it would be one who never quits!

Persistence and agility are powerful! Observe how, soft and accommodating water is able to erode hard rocks into well rounded pebbles. So if you want to create something beautiful, keep at it with a soft attitude and you will see a wonderful outcome emerge gradually, appreciated by all. Start now...

<span style="color: #222222; The idea has been proposed by the Prime Minister of India and seconded by the President of the United States of America.

The world needs more the 6 billion of its population vaccinated to immunise the breeding ground of the Corona virus - the human. Every human is at risk of contracting Covid-19 if they have to lead a normal life of at the least socialising with other humans, a natural instinct of being a gregarious species.

If we don’t immunise the population of the planet fast, all of us will run a higher risk of dying early! So immunisation is a common purpose for every country and every individual, because who wants early death!!!

Questions:

1. Will Big Pharma that has spent millions on the research & development (R&D) of these vaccines be ready to allow anyone to manufacture them without any license fee to recover the cost of development?

2. Should a drug development & manufacturing company’s accounts be allowed to be audited by a statutory body to ascertain the cost of each shot after factoring in the cost of R&D and a nominal profit percentage be added to the total cost to make the retail price more affordable?

3. Should another manufacturer who is using the intellectual property of a drug discovering entity pay a nominal royalty so that the drug discovery company can recover costs of R&D?

One Solution:

Worldwide quotas for deciding the quantity of annual production of a particular patented drug can be set by the World Health Organisation and based on this quantity and audited costs of R&D, the royalty can be worked out to recover the costs of R&D.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; We live in a dual world of light and darkness. The true nature of the sun is light and warmth but sometimes clouds cover it and its true nature is not exhibited. Similarly, humans too have a true nature of light and warmth and we often close our mind and heart thereby being unable to exhibit our core qualities and the attitudes that emanate from it.

Closing your heart and mind to the light of Spirit can lead to burnout. I am going to enumerate the attitudes and qualities to not have and to have, and help you to open yourself up to your true nature.

Attitudes and qualities not to have

1. Know it all superior attitude: This is a sure failure as you are not willing to be a continuous learner. There is always something you do not know so why have a condescending superior attitude about yourself. Be willing to listen and don’t try to always prove others wrong or prove yourself right.

2. Loser attitude or I’m not good enough attitude: There could be many reasons for this from your childhood onwards. The fact is that you are unique just like each of the five fingers in your hand are unique. All five are needed when you want to pick up a heavy load. You are awesome.

3. Cursing attitude: Don’t feel jealous of people who you think have a better life than you. Each human being has challenges and if you get a close look at their lives you will find out that the rich person who moves around in a Mercedes may have a health challenge and needs dialysis every week! So don’t curse those who you think are well off. It just spreads negative energy around which will affect you as well.

4. Fear: Fear comes from insecurities but your true nature is one of complete security. You can reach a state of security with meditation which will then make you more confident too. Caution is okay to protect yourself but fear inhibits your performance.

Attitudes and qualities to have

1. Commitment: Do only that which interests you otherwise you will not have commitment and will not be consistently working on something to take it to its completion. Employers do not want people who leave things half done. They want you to do whatever it takes to achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

2. Work-Life Balance: Set aside time for what you love to do - time with family, hobbies, a larger cause which is selfless such as environment, health & wellness, time with community, social work etc. If you don’t do this, your performance will go down after a stretch of constantly working on something and may lead to stress and burnout.

3. Responsibility: Be willing to take responsibility for jobs tasked to you or if not willing, say outright what help you need to be able to do it. Taking responsibility means looking into all aspects of a job and nurturing a job role till you are assigned to it. It’s like taking care of a family member. You cannot suddenly leave your grandmother alone and go for a holiday if you have taken responsibility to look after her. Employers want you to be responsible for Objectives & Key Results (OKRs).

4. Acceptance: There are times when you don’t like a colleague and if it weighs on you it will get you down. Accept people as they are unless they have asked you to change them. Because a person is a particular way you can know who and what you are by comparison. Acceptance is the single most important life skill and attitude that will add to a state of constant happiness.

5. Cheerfulness: Have you ever seen a grumpy person successful in life? A seed for success is cheerfulness and a happy attitude. Take things lightly or with humour. If you pronounce a word wrong just laugh at it and move on.

6. Appreciation: This is a great way to motivate team members and colleagues. It’s a good idea to acknowledge and appreciate work that pleased you. Also if you don’t like what someone has done don’t call out the person, but call out the work. You can say “the work is not up to the mark” and not, “you are not up to the mark”.

7. Integrity: This is all about doing what’s right in a circumstance when no one is looking. Your inner conscience knows very well what’s wrong so please do not do what’s not right. It’s wrong to steal. It’s wrong to claim expenses based on false bills or inflated bills. For long term rewards you have to be truthful.

8. Awareness: Do you know that Awareness is to be keenly observant of-

i) What is so and why?

ii) What can change it and why?

iii) What are the probable outcomes of your choices?

Curiosity to know these answers will make you more aware and therefore more mature and rounded. You can begin by asking questions about your health or about the health of the planet. Ex. A Disease / Pollution.

9. Empathy and Helpfulness: Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference. You need to place yourself in another's position to know what they may be going through. But just empathy is not enough. You need to give a helping hand too for your empathy to become useful. Helping selflessly gives a helpers high with Serotonin which prevents burnout.

10. Gratitude: An attitude of gratitude keeps you centred and away from negative feelings. Being grateful for what you have creates abundance. Being grateful to people for what they have done for you brings more help to you. Right now, I am grateful to you for reading this article. Are you grateful for something today?

Imbibe these qualities into your daily life. The best way to do it is to learn some kind of meditation and physical exercise which will help the dark clouds that are hiding your true light, to get scattered away.

Want to know about the DNA for success? Click here

To subscribe to receive more helpful articles FREE, click here - Subscribe

To read daily insights and inspirations "Like" our Facebook page - Facebook

Read cool, inspiring and helpful stuff on this blog by clicking on this link - Spiritual Pointers

Ajit Dasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01911710694417983081noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518738028259236987.post-56191199084583218642021-01-01T15:05:00.008+05:302021-01-02T10:12:28.384+05:30 The DNA for Success

Your biological DNA carries instructions for the development, functioning, growth and reproduction of your body. But your body is merely an instrument for living your life purpose.

What about your life purpose itself? It too needs codes for all four of these aspects enumerated below-

Development

Functioning

Growth

Reproduction

So let’s explore the core codes you need to have for each of these aspects for your life to progress beneficially.

1. Development - This requires a curious mindset and an interest for life long learning. You should have questions for everything that you see or hear and not accept things as gospel truth just because a well meaning person is telling you something. Think again even though thinking is hard and don’t come to conclusions but to a current understanding which may change with time. The more you learn this way and the more you experience life the more you will develop.

2. Functioning - The chief codes of conduct for smooth functioning are integrity, commitment and intelligence. If you don’t have integrity you probably love yourself more than your purpose and will end up as a narcissistic. If you don’t have commitment you will flitter about not achieving much. If you don’t work with intelligence you will fumble and fall often. All three will impair your functioning if you do not develop them and you must have them all to move ahead sure-footedly.

3. Growth - When you mature, you grow, and diving deep into experience helps you with that. See more places, meet different types of people, reflect on challenges and contemplate about your future course. All these are like manure for your growth.

4. Reproduction - Propagation is a law of nature. Trees grow and bear fruits that ripen and fall to the ground bursting out seeds, some of which grow into trees. Ask yourself which fruits do I have that I can plough back into my life to bear more fruit? It can be accumulated wealth that can start a new range of what you do or knowledge applied in a new combination leading to innovation.

All the four aspects given above must go on simultaneously so that your life purpose follows a natural pattern which will always turn out healthier and will hold greater promise.

You are lucky that you can develop your life DNA to move from strength to strength with serial successes and a heavenly life that you will love and others will admire.

What are you waiting for? Get on with it now and start today with some of the things you learnt...

Want to know about 11 C’s for success during Covid times? Click here

To subscribe to receive more helpful articles FREE, click here - Subscribe

To read daily insights and inspirations "Like" our Facebook page - Facebook

Read cool, inspiring and helpful stuff on this blog by clicking on this link - Spiritual Pointers

Ajit Dasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01911710694417983081noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518738028259236987.post-24803486626503777192020-09-21T12:54:00.008+05:302022-02-19T06:57:00.484+05:30 11 C’s for success during Covid times of uncertainty

Covid has caused uncertainties in income, health, wellbeing and relationships. Uncertainties can take you into negative spirals of thoughts and emotions specially when there is discomforting news. Remember these 11 C’s of success while navigating through Covid times of uncertainty. If you sow these 11 seeds now, they will help you live the life of your dreams and at the same time help you to contribute to the betterment of the world.

Compassion – This is the highest intelligence which is why it comes first. Unless you are doing something for the betterment of humankind in some way you will not have lasting success. Compassion is also the parent of most leadership qualities. Empathy at the workplace and at home keeps everyone motivated and well, which is specially needed during Covid times. Empathy requires good comprehension too, so put your focus on understanding a situation holistically before reaching out to help.

Collaboration – You cannot be the master of all trades nor have the time to do all things needed to succeed. So one has to use the services of people, for things you are not a master at and for providing you with enough leisure time for a work-life balance. Corona has made it possible to collaborate remotely with experts and there are a lot of people out there in the Gig economy who can help you. Use them beneficially.

Curiosity – Questioning is more important than answering because questions open doors to new avenues. During Covid times one has to innovate and without questioning this is not possible. You have to question old ways for them to yield place to new.

Commitment – There’s always a way if you are committed. Commitment requires belief in what you are doing and that’s what keeps you persistently at something without letting up on your steam. Without commitment during Covid times you will lose interest in your work while working from home or if out of a job. Commit yourself to a larger cause or goal, such as the environment, caring, or technology for development and that will keep you going.

Creativity – This is most needed in Corona times to overcome the risky situations this virus has created. How can you be creative? There is something called Design Thinking that is being adopted by literature, art, music, science, engineering, and business alike. It involves empathetically understanding your customers’ needs, brainstorming, questioning ideas, prototyping, testing and iterating. Use this practical design process in your creativity.

Courage – Don’t sit idle during a lock down because it may lead to a negative spiral of thoughts emanating from fear. Have the courage to interact with people and think of ideas never thought of before. You never know what might make a difference.

Confidence – The risks of Corona can undermine your confidence. How about thinking of it this way - According to WHO, in 2016, 56.9 million deaths were reported worldwide out of a population of 7,426.1 million i.e. 0.77%, and in 2020, the Covid-19 year, it is going to go up by 0.02% and be about 0.79%. So the slightly higher risk to your life, which is temporary till a vaccine pervades the market, many of which are on the verge of deployment, should make you more confident to face life boldly with just a little bit of caution.

Caution – It’s important to have a livelihood and also to realise your dreams so that you don’t live a life that is dead. During Covid times the safest way of going about your work is taking precautions of wearing a mask, keeping a physical distance of 6 feet from people you meet, sanitising your hands regularly and also every time you enter and leave a place, and building immunity by having multivitamins, nutritious food and daily exercise.

Communication – Thanks to Covid, communication has become easy with so many digital platforms providing seamless connects through video calls that function even with low bandwidths. Unless you are connected to a large network through social media and other means it is not possible to scale your work rapidly. You can even be connected to a large number of family members and friends at the same time through video calls which is a very satisfying experience during these uncertain Corona times. At least one thing is certain, the person you need to talk to is a few clicks away from you now, wherever you or they may be. Take advantage of this fact.

Calmness – No point in getting your adrenalin up. It’s only meant for fight or flight situations. So sail through your days’ work or this moments’ assignment, without being in a rush. This will open up a space of “presence of mind” in your brain that ensures what you are doing is more perfect.

Cheerfulness – Have you ever seen a glum and closed person succeed? I guess No. Cheerfulness is an important secret to success. It comes from your soul and it comes when you pour out from your soul whatever you are offering to the world. Bring out your innate self and you will be cheerful. It may be stand-up comedy, playing a musical instrument, speaking in your favourite language, writing prose or poetry, painting, or just caring.

You need not have all these 11 qualities to begin with, but you can start to cultivate them now. Corona also means silver lining. This virus is telling the world to pivot, reset and start anew to bring in a better world, which is the silver lining. Ask yourself what new tack can I take to succeed in this new world order of digitisation and green practices? It doesn’t matter if you are a student, professional or an entrepreneur, there is always something you can do differently to succeed.

You have something that you are one of the best at in the world. Uncertainties cause worry and during Covid times there are many, some of them being:

Your job

Your income

Your health

So how do you stay positive in the face of these dark clouds hovering above you?

Well for starters remember that no cloud is chained to the sky and the adverse situation you may be facing too shall pass.

Do not hesitate to ask for help when you need it. People during Covid times are especially collaborative and will go out of their way to give assistance.

Use positive words instead of negative ones. For example if you are taking an anti-depression drug you can say, “I’m having a mood elevator”. If you are unemployed you may want to say, “I’m looking for a new job that is more fulfilling”. If you have lost some income, say, “I’m bracing for something that will give me a windfall”.

There is a fine line between fear and caution. The one who is cautious can still be courageous. Courageous to live a long life. But the one who is fearful is not at all courageous. So, during Covid times if you are mingling with people please do take precautions of physical distancing and wearing a mask. But don’t go into a fear of Covid and confine yourself into a room, because if you do, your life will come to a grinding halt.

Be courageous to go out into the open with caution appropriate for your individual condition of course. If you get a small load of antigens in the bargain it will only make you and your immune system stronger. The verdict is out by many scientists that life will come back to normal once we as a people develop herd-immunity and herd-immunity happens when a large proportion of a population develops immunity to a disease. So contribute to herd-immunity by going about your work and you will also contribute to moving the economy if you do so. A vaccine when discovered will protect you only for a limited period because of new strains of the Covid virus emerging but a strong immune system will take you through dark clouds whenever they appear.

Don't wait for the storm to pass, learn to dance in the rain

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger

Want to know about Covid leadership? Covid times require a leader to start with empathy because each one of us including you are equally vulnerable to the following.

Contracting the Covid-19 virus

A drop in income

Restriction of movement

So how do we tackle the above mentioned three aspects with empathetic leadership at home and at the work place?

Preventive measures for Covid-19 (Needs diligence)

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) - You don’t have to invent the wheel again for implementing preventive measures for contracting the spread of Covid-19 at your home or workplace. The WHO and large manufacturing companies such as Toyota have already come up with SOPs during Covid times. All you need to do is get someone to take responsibility for implementing these measures in your home or workplace and conduct regular monitoring of them. The Covid in-charge actually has to be like a monitor in a classroom calling out persons not adhering to the SOPs. You could even setup or use existing CCTVs for monitors to do their job.

Work From Home (WFH) - Deciding strategically who works from home and when, is an exercise that must be done with focus and understanding. Regular feedback from employees on the pros and cons of working from home on particular jobs must be taken to get a better understanding on what’s working for your organisation.

Tackling drops in income (A hard task that needs gentleness)

Dropping Costs - Dropping costs can offset drops in incomes in a business so that the bottom line doesn’t go into the red. Negotiations with your supply chain will yield results because right now everybody is looking for movement in business so that their revenues pick up even if it is at a discount.

Reduction of Emoluments - Reduction of emoluments of employees have to be handled in small groups and should be need based. You cannot reduce these emoluments to a level where monthly bills and rents cannot be paid by employees. A talk with each level of employee to know their needs and then come to a collective decision will keep the motivations in your organisation charged.

Deep Discounts - Deep discounts on the goods and services you offer will drive your dropping revenues from almost nil to at least 50-60% of what they were pre-Covid. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish when deciding your discount plans.

Innovation - Innovation is positive and positively the winner of all of the above, for tackling drops in income. Digital platforms have proved their worth during Covid times and are the favoured route for delivery of goods and services during these times. You have to lead the digital transformation of your business whichever way you can and there is no way out for this. Innovation happens with innovative people. Identify the innovative people in your organisation and together with them develop a new product or service strategy. It may not be exactly what the market needs so do a pilot of a Minimum Viable Product to test its performance in the market place. The best designs are those designed with empathy.

Restriction of movement (Try the many options to overcome this challenge)

Video Calls - Depression has to be handled by augmenting your life-satisfaction by having video calls with loved ones regularly and daily calls are recommended.

Exotic Meals - Not being able to go out for exotic meals has to be handled by either learning to cook great meals from the many recipe websites and video channels now available free or ordering in a meal from any of the home delivery Mobile apps operational in your city.

Movies - Not being able to go out for movies has to be handled either by subscribing to movie Apps or channels and watching your choice of films from the comfort of your home.

Shopping - Not being able to shop has to be handled by shopping online from the array of online shopping websites and Mobile apps. Don’t forget to buy your favourite book too and curl up in a cozy corner of your home to read it. This will take care of a lot of Covid-19 adverse conditions.

It seems, all you need is the will to love yourself, love others and love your work to reach a work-life balance to thrive in a Covid world.

We are all in it together

I went onto a forum that's been created for emotional and spiritual support and was moved to see the painful circumstances some people were going through. I felt very empathetic towards them and delved deep inside myself to give them some answers that I thought may help them, and help others with similar circumstances too. So here are the questions of four people put out on this forum who reached out for help to overcome their pain and each question is followed by my answer for guidance.

Question 1: I started this spiritual journey to awakening about 2 years ago and it seems the further into my journey I get, the more disconnected I feel. I get these feelings like I don’t want to be part of this world anymore. I see more and more the greed, selfishness, meanness, and madness going on and it's so disappointing and disheartening. It's at a level I wouldn’t even be able to describe, but I’m constantly feeling like I want to leave this place and go “home”. Not in a suicidal way but rather in a tired and just need rest kind of way. Like to retire to a familiar, peaceful, comforting place. Is this normal? Is it something I should be working on to “fix”?

Answer 1: A great life skill to have along your spiritual path is to accept others as they are and not have any expectations of them. Expectations reduce joy!
However, for yourself you need to have expectations, otherwise you may not improve and become better!
Life is not about retiring to a familiar, peaceful and comforting space! A ship was not meant to remain at the harbour, but journey through the waves and the weather which are sometimes rough and other times smooth. We are all in this journey in different parts of the ocean and meditation helps the ship to remain in balance as you encounter tough and painful circumstances.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Question 2: I have been in a relationship for about 13 years. We’ve been married for 10.
I have had a tough past and I have been working on releasing trauma, recovering from addictions, working on emotional and spiritual growth. My husband understands my interest but is not involved in any of these topics himself. He is quite closed off emotionally and while he tries his best, he is not able to interact in any other way than strictly rational. As a highly sensitive, intuitive and empathetic person myself, this is very difficult.
As I have been growing over the last few years, I have started to notice patterns and behaviors in our relationship that are not healthy. We never discuss our relationship or emotions. Whenever I try this, he turns the conversation to focus on me and it’s always my issues and problems being discussed. I do not feel emotionally connected to him.
In the past, I think I was happy with this because I didn’t have to look into my traumatic past. But since I chose to work on that, I am struggling with his stonewalling. I do not feel seen emotionally. As a result, I feel I am closing off from him as well.
I have started to realize he is very controlling and anxious, although he will never admit this. He never shares how he feels.
But he does a lot of practical things to help me out in daily life. Seemingly, we have a great life. Lovely home, steady income. No kids (by choice). But I am so unhappy. I am not creating anymore, I used to be a cheerful person, now I’m just sad and negative all the time.
In short, I feel trapped. I feel imprisoned and while I want to get out and claim my own space, I can’t seem to do it. It might be fear because I have no family and I would be alone. On the other hand, I crave finally having freedom and being able to breathe.
I have been looking within, working with the imprisoned feeling, working on inner peace and empowerment. I am trying to hold faith, trust the process and knowing that the time will come, but at the same time I am afraid I am being too passive and I am seeing my life passing by.

Answer 2: I fully understand what you are going through and every circumstance is there to prod you into making a choice to either “wake up” further or remain where you are!
I noticed that in your path of spiritual growth, friendships are missing or maybe you didn’t mention them. Warmth of friendships leads to life-satisfaction. I gently urge you to either join a community of like minded people, develop further your existing friendships by sharing more time with friends or develop a new friendship with the 7 steps of friendship – know, trust, love, embrace, use, help and thank.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Question 3: There isn’t a short way to describe how I got where I am today or what help I think others could possibly give me but I’m willing to try and think about things in a different perspective.
I left Germany when I was 21 leaving behind all my family for a new life in New Zealand. I had 2 beautiful children to my first husband there, leaving him after 10 years of domestic violence.
I found my soulmate there and he raised my children for 14 years. I lost him in 2011 to cancer. I was devastated and completely lost it for a while.
I met some one new who everyone else hated and two years into our relationship he was arrested. I listened to his story and stood by him, went into witness protection. We came back to Germany to be safe. At first I was working in Germany but then my mother was diagnosed with dementia and I moved in with her so I could help take care of my parents.
He left for New Zealand for his court case two years ago and never returned.
I have been back to New Zealand twice to see my kids who are adults now but my heart is torn. My mother has gone into a home for respite care during the Corona virus outbreak due to aggressive behaviour of my father having put him in hospital.
It's just awful. I’m trying hard to pull myself together and be there for my parents and I know now I can’t go home to New Zealand for the time being. I never thought I would have to face this alone and feel very abandoned by the person I stood by. Despite his past I believed him to be good at heart.
I have thought many times that I wasn’t in a good place when we met and maybe my judgement was off. I have tried to forget the whole episode but he does contact me occasionally and it completely sends me off the rails again.
I believe my biggest problem is that I never thought I would be back in my home town. I left for a reason - a better life. To find myself back here, and worse, alone, is soul destroying.
Two weeks to pull my self together for when my mother comes back home and I will be looking after her and my father 24x7. I have been caring for them now two years with my sister and we are both worn out. It sounds so callous and I love my parents but should I be giving up making a life for myself in order to care of them?
I’ve made a mess of it all so far and am at a loss. I can pull my girl socks up and get on with it but how do I get back some control in my own life?

Answer 3: You have been through a lot and that makes one stronger and not weaker!
I fully understand that some of the circumstances you have been through can throw you off balance physically, emotionally and mentally and then, it is only the overarching calmness of spirit that can bring you back to balance.
I would recommend daily meditation, prayer and exercise for the moment and the Corona lock-down is a great opportunity to get onto an online learning platform for knowing more about them.
It’s good to be self-sufficient materially and I recommend that you ask yourself 3 questions:
1. What do I love doing?
2. What do my friends think I am great at?
3. What does the world need?
The common points of your answers will give you a way forward to prosper.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Question 4: After a lifetime of unhappiness in an emotionally dysfunctional family, and after my parents died, having that continue with my only 2 siblings (twins) who were constantly judgmental, critical and unsupportive, I have finally “had it”. And though walking away from the only remaining blood family I had on earth was not what I would have ever chosen, I have finally, with great difficulty, walked away at the age of 65. Throughout my life, I never had the courage to confront the sibling who was most cruel emotionally (he can be very abrasive, & also, in one instance in our teens, was physically & verbally abusive to our mother). But recently I wrote a respectful but very honest, open letter, explaining my reasons, and assuring him that I wasn’t angry, still loved him & would be there if he ever needed my help. And that there was never anything I wanted worse in life than for us to not get along. It’s been a month now, & no reply or other communication from him since. The other sibling has now also ceased communication, and barely responds when I attempt the same. In one way, walking away has been massively freeing & healing. Yet sometimes I still have feelings of “did I handle this in the best way” and “is there more that I can do”. And the sadness of having no real blood family now is very difficult at times. What makes it especially complicated is that in spite of the brother’s verbal abuse, he was often helpful to me with home improvement tasks, etc., also taking me to Emergency Room (ER) twice in recent years, and even staying with me all night there once. Yet (aside from the ER trips) my time with him was always at a heavy emotional price. Any time he was helping me with a project, he was also being very critical, condescending & disrespectful – and never had a positive word for me, EVER.
I was constantly bewildered as to where I stood with him. Still, since I never confronted him, I can’t help wonder if maybe he just didn’t realize what he was doing. I’m feeling very unsure at this point, as to whether it’s worth trying to have any further conversation with him.
So lately I have pondered 3 questions:
1) Should I visit my brother & ask if he has anything to say to me, and/or if he has any interest in my being in his life.
2) Should I try to explain things to my sister, who has no clue of the kind of things he has said/done, & refuses to believe her twin could be capable of such. After one brief attempt on my part, she basically accused me of “overreacting to sibling rivalry” (far from true; it wasn’t about disagreements, it was about put-downs. And for the record, I never once put him down or treated him with disrespect). She has also quite adamantly in the past stated, “don’t write me any more letters, I can’t deal with them” (although to my knowledge I only wrote one letter about family issues, which was as kind and respectful as I could possibly make it). Instead of seeing my letter as an attempt at open honesty & a cry for help, she accused me of “drama and bad attitude”.
3) Should I send my sister a short note just saying I’m sorry for the misunderstandings, sorry I could never quite ‘measure up’, that I love her & am there for her if she ever needs my help.
I sincerely appreciate any insight into this matter, as this has been the most difficult cross I have had to bear in my life.

Answer 4: I sympathize with what you have been going through with your siblings and so far you have acted in the best possible way to have an amicable relationship.
Since it hasn’t worked out, perhaps you are being forced by God to go within and find your sibling and mate there. So turn towards daily meditation.

Meditation also has mysterious ways of connecting you back with people who have been estranged. But you just have to let go about when it will happen.
_________________________________________________________________________________

After reading these painful circumstances the least you can do is pray for these souls to overcome their pain with God's grace.

In order that we all get cracking to start work in new and safe ways, policy makers, influencers and industrialists must immediately issue guidelines for the same in view of the threats posed by the Corona virus.

3 key important points to be looked into in the wake of Covid-19 are:

Precautions

Economy

Environment

1. Precautions: For the time being, an important thing that we can do is to take precautions to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus and build policies for the same.

At the government level, the best method is quarantine of likely infected persons and allowing them to leave after 14 days if not infected and treating infected persons in self-isolation or special Covid-19 hospitals till they are free from the Covid-19 infection. We must ensure that the experience of people in quarantine centres and Covid-19 hospitals should be one of being cared for with empathy and one should not get a feeling of being herded into anyone of them.

For individuals, governments should issue and circulate guidelines to take simple precautions such as building immunity, wearing masks, social distancing of minimum 6 feet, and washing hands with soap or sanitizers at regular intervals. For higher risk individuals at places such as hospitals, quarantine centres and airports, full Personal Protective Equipment needs to be worn by their personnel.

2. Economy: We need to kick start the economy as fast as possible so that at least bread if not butter can be afforded by workers. Voluntary and forced lock-downs during the Covid-19 pandemic have severely strained cash flows that drive the economy.

As a head of an organisation, you should enforce the Covid-19 standard operating procedures and protocols of working at a common workplace and get to work. Here’s a link to download an intelligent PDF document prepared by Toyota to restart manufacturing, from which you can pick up guidelines applicable to your organisation -
Toyota Restart Manual

“Work From Home” should be encouraged wherever possible, such as in advisory work, digital work and cottage industry.

Governments must bring more money into circulation to reboot the economy and utilise it for low interest loan distribution to farmers and entrepreneurs, and earmark a substantial portion for green infrastructure development projects.

3. Environment & well-being: Covid-19 has made us experience the pleasurable side of Nature with chirping birds, clean air to breathe and a blue sky to see. Every policy maker, lobbyist and industrialist must advocate lean and green methods of doing work at every level. This has been an important message of Covid-19 to humanity. The human race is not the “monarch” of the planet but vulnerable to Nature. The Corona virus has given a rap on our knuckles on behalf of Nature to change our ways and change what we imagine economic development and progress to mean as a race. Gross National Product may not be the best measure of our progress so try considering other parameters such as Gross National Happiness with its four pillars below which contribute to well-being and life satisfaction:

Sustainable and equitable socio-economic development

Environmental conservation

Preservation and promotion of culture

Good governance

I believe that if we follow the above advice, then very soon the earth will become a better place to live in.

Inclusive prosperity is the way to global harmony

Our fellow human beings are dying by the thousands as a result of the Corona virus. Seeing the pitiable state of the world, those who may have been hard-hearted before are waking up to their compassionate and empathetic side within.

You need to notice the changes in your life forced by Nature through its messenger - the Corona virus, and you need to realise the beneficial impact these changes will have on earth if you continue with them.

6 things to realise as an aftermath of the "Corona Virus"

Are you realising just how wasteful our over-consumption has been and that without venturing out for a shopping spree or for a lavish meal you have almost everything to keep you sustained?

Are you noticing how greater focus on your family and more time to receive your family’s warmth is giving deeper levels of life satisfaction than before?

Are you noticing that you are no longer in a rush to reach your office in time or to complete a job before a deadline leading to your creativity and productivity being higher than before?

Are you realising that you don’t necessarily have to travel to meet your friends and colleagues and that they are just a video call away?

Are you realising that cinema watched at home may be more satisfying than that watched in a movie hall?

Are you feeling like learning something new from home to live an upgraded life?

The entire planet is reevaluating life and how we live and work as a result of the threat to life posed by Covid-19. The Corona virus has brought in a new Axial Age where we are seeing major pivots happen right in front of our eyes. Here are 6 things it is forcing you to do:

It is forcing you to adopt ways that are lean and green.

It is forcing you to introspect and reflect on new paradigms for economic development.

It is forcing you to think with a global perspective and act with a local perspective.

It is forcing you to accept that the human race is not the "monarch" of the planet but vulnerable to Nature and making you grateful, for the abundance you enjoyed before Covid-19; for the air you breathe which is free unlike the air from a ventilator; and for your survival.

It is forcing you to have a humane approach to life.

It is forcing you not to race but to experience the grace of a slower pace. . .

What does it mean to adapt to new ways?

You need to understand that even when our great scientists find a cure for the Corona virus and its threat to life diminishes, you have to continue with the lifestyle changes you made so that we together make the earth into a happy and flourishing planet. The literal meaning of “Corona” is silver lining - a negative occurrence leading to a positive outcome. A silver lining will be visible on earth only if you obey the “commands” of the Corona virus like a soldier reporting for duty!

You have come to a planet where the force of love is lesser than the usual present in the spiritual realm. This is somewhat like the force of gravity on the moon being lesser than the earth and astronauts have a tough time on the moon with every action being delayed. But, this experience makes them realise the value of gravity on earth when they return back to earth to find that the responses to all physical actions are not delayed.

You are born on a planet in the universe, which is a material realm of weak love and analogous to the low gravity moon as compared to the high gravity earth, which the spiritual realm of strong love is analogous to. The material universe has been devised as a place to experience “less than perfect” love or weak love.

When your Spirit arrives on your planet in the universe, as should we say, a very courageous “Humanaut” wearing a “space suit” - the human body, it experiences different levels of love that are less than the strong love of the spiritual realm that it knows of and has got used to. Weak love on a planet causes love to play out in slow motion and you may have experienced some of these situations:

Not reaching your hearts desires immediately.

Taking time to show your love.

Others taking time to respond to you with love.

Some people just not loving you very much, causing you to remain at a distance from them.

You really have to go through so many experiences caused by a lack of love that at times you feel despair, frustration and anger. You may have often asked yourself, "Why me?" Well, it's not just you but everyone here on this planet.

All of this happens for a reason and a larger purpose, and each one of us has chosen to be here for this purpose. And, the purpose is –
To experience weak love, in order to make you fully realize what strong love and a feeling of unity in the spiritual realm really is, when your Spirit returns back to the spiritual realm.

To those who ask, why can’t we feel strong love in the spiritual realm? The answer is, no delays and no separation in the timeless spiritual realm makes you suffer from a lack of being able to experience love. So, when you come to your planet of weak love you are meant to look for ways and means to give and receive love. You have to make an extra effort to love just like astronauts on the low gravity moon have to make an extra effort to walk.

So, just go out and make an extra effort to help those in need, give gifts to people, return a favour, and do any act of kindness that you feel will make someone feel loved in order that love can be experienced.

After the experience of love on your planet you will no longer take the strong love of the spiritual realm for granted, but will be able to constantly feel its magnificence and just BE LOVE in the spiritual realm instead of just knowing intellectually that love is always present. Furthermore, weak love will cause experiences of separation to make you fully appreciate the feeling of unity in the spiritual realm.

And guess what? You will be celebrated in the spiritual realm when you return to it just like our astronauts are celebrated, when, after completing a long and arduous expedition to the moon, they return home!

So, whenever you are facing a situation of a lack of love, remember this metaphor of an astronaut on the moon walking in slow motion, and know you are a “Humanaut” on earth for a great reason - to better understand LOVE as the most magnificent force in existence.

Usually, people, after prayer, worship, devotional singing, inspirational reading, rituals and meditation, disconnect from the spiritual realm with the mind saying in some way that it is “done”!

If we do not entertain the idea that these spiritual practices are “done”, if we do not allow the mind to say that a ritual is over, then the spiritual will stay on with you throughout...

Would you not rather have a river of spirit whose flow has been developed through spiritual practice to run constantly and not spoil it with a “dam” of limiting thoughts.

When you need to use your mind for work, let it be enabled by the spiritual. During work we can constantly refer to our spiritual awareness like we refer to a book for better understanding.

It is the mind that raises a cloud of thoughts, which usually are to do with the future, that block out the rays of spiritual light that are there to show you the way.

A great way to disperse these clouds of thoughts made up of “molecules” of fear, doubt, anxiety, achievement goals, etcetera is to just love the future. Guess what? Loving the future will also build your enthusiasm and passion for life.

Here are a few steps to make your spiritual practices into a continuum, instead of entertaining an idea of completion, which will help you to think and act from a state of being-ness:

1. Start with being grateful for your past and what can be better than being grateful that your past has ensured that you are alive today.

2. Then, accept the present. And why not? You cannot send back what has showed up today. You cannot un-ring a bell that has just chimed.

3. Now, you are ready to love the future with your heart wide open and your mind open to receive whatever it may throw up. If you have difficulty in loving the unknown future, then love the mystery and the suspense of it.

What you love will give you something that you love.

Born leaders are rare. They have an inexplicable magnetism that draws people towards them. An example of born leaders are the Dalai Lamas, the Buddhist leaders for spreading compassion and helping people attain enlightenment, who have been chosen in their childhood for the last six centuries based on spiritual signs.

Leadership is now believed to be a skill that can be acquired by working upon yourself.

Let’s start with a question. Ask yourself, “Why do I want to be a leader?”
The answer is likely to be - To take forward a cause close to my heart.

Then ask, “How will I know that I have become a leader?”
The answer is, “You are not a leader, if you are not able to make people follow what you wish them to follow.”

So what is it that will make people follow you to take forward your cause?

At a leadership workshop of 50 bright students this is exactly what was asked and out of the 50 different answers that came from these students 37 were most relevant.

Broadly the answers were of two categories:

Self-qualities that will draw people to you.

Qualities towards others that will draw people to you.

I am going to elaborate upon these leadership qualities so that you can, recognize the ones you have and build upon the ones that you need to develop, to be a great and authentic leader in the New Age.

SELF-QUALITIES FOR LEADERSHIP:

Constant evolution: One who is continuously improving through self-development. Go for wholeness, perfection will follow. Reading New Age stuff and attending workshops will help to stay relevant, somewhat like an “App” that needs a download of regular updates for better performance and adaptation to new trends.

Courageous: One who takes the bull by the horns and moves forward. But when tackling evil, you need courage with caution.

Confident: One who knows what they are doing and where they are going. Unstoppable but not overconfident nor arrogant in attaining your vision.

Good speaker: Proficient verbal communication in gatherings and interviews is important to get people fired to do what you wish them to do. Imparting your original, non-cliched thoughts without any ambiguity is important and so is being humorous. Clarity should be part of your communications strategy, so before you speak, understand.

Problem solver: One who doesn’t desist from delving into problems to solve them. Don’t walk away from hurdles but cross them. Thinking itself is a box. If you want "out of the box" solutions, be silent to open this ''box" to get insights and then focus your awareness on them.

Leads by example: One who shows the way by leading from the front whenever possible. Be the path-breaker but not pompous about it.

Responsible: Taking responsibility does not mean you are guilty. It means that you have the conviction to lead and do whatever it takes to get the best outcomes.

Selfless worker: This shows that you can sacrifice a few things dear to your heart in order to take forward your cause. There is no gain without pain. But this pain will not be a suffering.

Positive attitude: This keeps you going even in the face of adversity and lifts your spirits as well as the spirits of those around you. Positivity attracts positivity and this will always help.

Committed: One who is consistently involved with a cause will always achieve. The persistence of soft water flowing over hard rocks is able to round them beautifully.

Calm in the face of adversity: A high emotional quotient is needed so that you become an anchor for those who are following you. A low emotional quotient will drive people away from you because negative emotions are like a bad odour. Natural equanimity in the face of opposition is desired.

Energetic: People like to see a spring in your step. It is magnetic. Exercise makes one more energetic.

Powerful: If you are not well connected you are not powerful. In today’s age your network is your net-worth. It is wise to pilot your leadership in an initial hub before using networking to scale up, because when you showcase your abilities others are drawn to you.

Creative: Creativity makes your approach innovative, and newness is always welcomed. A balance of inspection and introspection will enhance your creativity especially in tackling uncertainties and complexities.

Enthusiastic: Enthusiasm begets enthusiasm. Be passionate towards your cause, and always hungry to do more and push boundaries.

Idealistic: Keeping to noble, ethical and moral principles of a land is important. Any immorality on your part will take people away from you. Do what is right. Don’t do anything against your cause in private, otherwise you yourself will become ambiguous.

Resilient: If you fall down seven times, get up eight times. Be a champion who never quits. A secret of champions is that they take regular breaks to recharge.

Intelligent: Intelligence is a quality that can be developed with mental exercises such as Gestalt Thinking. This is important for strategic thinking to achieve your goals. Basic knowledge at macro and micro levels on subjects such as human aspects, technology enablement, outreach and economics is important to come to an understanding that is larger than the sum of the parts of these aspects. Answer questions with a presence of mind.

Acceptable Appearance: Do in Rome as the Romans do. You need to look appealing to your target audience for them to be drawn.

QUALITIES TOWARDS OTHERS FOR LEADERSHIP:

Takes everyone along: Don’t let anyone feel left out from your cause. Involve them in your processes and engage them for something meaningful in your cause. A feeling of ownership is important to keep your followers loyal to your cause. You are not supposed to be a super hero, so being vulnerable and asking for help is okay. Making a few decisions democratically by engaging in regular conversations is a good idea and so is the idea of saying, “We did it”. Discriminations should be made upon declared criteria.

Concern for team members: Anticipate needs of team members. Read about the paradigms of different generational groups and become sensitive to them. Help team members to improve their performance. Do not consider one team or team member to be superior to others. Respect for others is paramount for leadership.

Makes leaders: An incredible law of the universe is that, what you give you get. So the more leaders you make and empower the more your leadership will be enforced by the universe. This can turn out to be a catalyst for your cause. Find the optimal mix of giving control and being in control.

Good listener: Do not listen to reply, but listen to expand your understanding. If you try to prove you are the smartest, you actually prove you are not smart, because there is no definition of ''smartest". Be open to receiving feedback without any biases on your part.

Inspirer: You need to inspire people for your cause with your thoughts, words and deeds. When you do this with feeling it has emotional appeal. Appreciation and recognition inspires. Figure out what motivates different generational groups. It’s not always a “carrot”.

Honest: Fact check and don’t project fake facts. Make sure that your transparency levels are so high that little can be done behind the back of your followers. This will enforce integrity and fairness which are important factors for building an attractive culture. Honesty builds trust and trust is a major capital a leader must continue to build.

Polite: Don’t just be a flower but a flower with a fragrance. People are drawn towards genuine kind words and genuine kind actions.

Empathetic: Feel what another feels and then act accordingly. Be kind.

Helper: This may be your ultimate fuel for happiness! When you help others you get a "helpers high" and others feel grateful about the help they receive. One good turn leads to another.

Belonging-ness: You have to come to an understanding that you and your followers are one family and you must behave like a family member. Family gatherings build fellowship.

Sacrifice: Sometimes you have to sacrifice something in order that your followers or your cause gets something beneficial.

Punctuality: If you are not punctual often, your followers may lose interest in you.

Willingness: Be willing to take up causes incidental to your main cause.

Flexibility: A rigid tree can break in the face of a storm but a flexible one survives. Be open to “pivoting” your cause or point of view, if the environment demands it. Be in an organic flow.

Supportive: If you find someone disturbed, take them aside at an appropriate moment and place, and give well considered inputs for solving their problems. Be an understanding counsellor.

Social: If you are an introvert how will you reach out effectively to people? So become social and gregarious because that’s the true nature of human beings. Learn how to use "social media" effectively.

Keeping to your word: This is important because if you don’t keep to your word often, people will lose trust in you.

Compassion: Pursue your passion with compassion for sustainability. Ensure that there is minimal “hurt” with what you are doing. Parent your cause. This is the parent of most leadership qualities.

A true affirmation of most of these leadership qualities is when you exhibit them even when concerned people are not looking.

Your soul is already, in bliss, aware, wise, creative, relaxed and also full of energy. All you need to do to renew yourself with its qualities is touch it by silencing your mind for a while. Meditation is how you do this and meditation is not as difficult as made out to be!

Before I give you a simple technique, let me tell you what it does. Meditation just increases the space between two thoughts and take note that there is nothing such as achieving complete stillness and no thought, here on earth! When the spaces between thoughts increase, there is less of habitual thinking which causes mental clutter and more of feelings and nudges coming from your heart. The hearts desires translate into thoughts in your mind and can be recognised by a relatively silent mind as your first thoughts on a subject. When we meditate, we can easily catch these "first thoughts" because we start to automatically watch what we are thinking! Here is an example of what a "first thought" is like and why you should follow it - If your friend asks you for a coffee and your first thought is a hesitation, then you must follow this hesitation and postpone your coffee for another time. Since your heart knows the future as well, the hesitation was caused because something closer to your heart, such as a close family member dropping by at home, is due to happen, and the coffee date will spoil it!

Now here are a couple of things to do to prepare yourself before you start your meditation:

First, the time has to be right. Early morning after a bath is a good time because you have yet not started your mind on thoughts about work.

Turn off any humming noise from appliances if you can.

Put your phone on "Silent" mode and if possible, place it in another room.

Sit straight on the floor or on a chair or bed.

Let your hands face up and legs be in a comfortable position because you don't want to focus on discomfort.

Close your eyes.

THE MEDITATION

After your preparation is done, slow down the pace of your breath to the slowest rhythm that is comfortable to you. This does not mean taking deep breaths but taking normal breaths at a slower pace.

Now, mentally follow your breath at the tip of your nose going in and then going out.

In your mind you can say “In” as you take a breath in from your nose and “Out” as you allow your breath to go out from your nose.

After sometime if you don't feel like saying it, just follow your breath going in from your nose and out of it, with the attention of your mind.

If some thoughts arise in between, let them come and go like you watch passing vehicles on the road. You don’t sit on every vehicle on the road and go off on it for a ride, do you? No! So, allow these thoughts to flow and just keep following your breath in and out with your mind.

Do this till you feel like. And, when you feel like coming out of it, lie down with your eyes closed.

Then, get up when you feel like and stay blissful by loving the day.

Try to do this every day at the same time but without timing it. Don't ever time it because meditation is all about going into a timeless zone.

Rest assured that with daily meditation, you will be renewed with soulful energy, inside-out, for the day, every day. Your clarity and creativity will give you joy and when expressed will give others joy. Each day will surely be a meaningful day!

A hurt in the heart is like an arrow striking your heart and sticking there. I am sure that at least once in your life you would have felt this way. Now, where did this “arrow” come from and how did it pierce your heart?

First, when you are a loving person, you keep your heart open permanently for those you love. There are no shields on it because out of love you have removed walls that divide and restrict. Then comes a person you love who may not necessarily want to hurt you, but because they are not operating from an open heart they may be unaware of how open hearts are vulnerable to words and actions that can slight the heart and slit it. They are operating from the mind and the ego which gives a sense of a separate self and not a sense of family. They are operating from the qualities of the mind like shrewdness and cleverness; logic and analysis; calculations and returns; unfaithfulness and disloyalty. All these are the “arrows” thrown at you from their minds in the form of words and actions, and because your heart is bare, they strike and injure it.

Now, if you don’t call this out to the person who hurt you, they will continue to injure you and the injury within will continue to fester in your heart! Calling it out is also like removing the arrow and throwing it away so that the injury can heal. Remember to call out your hurt very specifically to the person who hurt you and tell them exactly what it was that caused discomfort so that they don’t repeat such behaviour. If they still continue blindly with the same patterns, then the best thing is to avoid coming into their line of sight!

It is possible that because of a past hurt you decided to shield your heart and gradually opened it later with time. A shielded heart is unable to express feelings and these feelings get pent up inside the heart in the form of emotions. When your heart is hurt these emotions come bursting out and you get emotional with tears or crying out aloud. This is perfectly fine because the heavy load in your heart is being emptied out. You can try beating a pillow too to get all your emotions expelled out. E-motions are just “energies in motion” and it is beneficial to get them out at the first opportunity to lighten your heart. So in a sense, an injured heart may become a blessing in disguise!

Don’t ever close your heart with a shield because the heart radiates love like the sweet fragrance of a flower that attracts the gentle caress of loving beings. Your heart is the conduit of God to spread love in the universe too. Would you want to deny yourself all these joyous gifts for the sake of a few pinches that pain your heart?

In closing, here is an apt quote to encourage you to keep your heart open:

‘‘The wound is the place where the light enters you’’ - Rumi
